Roopa Ganguly, born on November 25, 1966, is an Indian actress, backing singer and politician. She is best known for her portrayal of Draupadi in B R Chopra’s hit television series Mahabharat (1988). Often touted as the Bengali film industry’s answer to Bollywood’s Shabana Azmi, it is known for its versatility and accents. She has worked with directors such as Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen, Goutam Ghose and Rituparno Ghosh. She is singer of Rabindra Sangeet and classical dancer. She has received several awards, including a national award and two BFJA awards.

In October 2015, she was appointed Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, by the President of India. She has held the position of BJP President Mahila Morcha in West Bengal. She served as General Secretary and Vice President of the West Bengal Film Artists Forum, an organization representing film artists.

Ganguly was born in Kalyani, near Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She grew up in a common family. She was a student of Beltala Girls’ High School [citation needed], from which she completed her high school exam (Madhyamik Pariksha). Later, she graduated from Jogamaya Devi College, a college of undergraduate women affiliated with Kolkata University in Calcutta.

Ganguly was married to Dhrubo Mukerjee from 1992 to 2006. They had a child in 1997. She also lived in a living relationship with her girlfriend, Dibyendu. The couple lived in Ganguly’s apartment in Mumbai until the end of their relationship.
