Vishnuvardhan was born on 18 September 1950, known Sampath Kumar, was an Indian film actor known for his works mainly at the Kannada Cinema. He has appeared in more than 220 films in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. It was called “the phoenix of Indian cinema”. He made his debut in the 1972 film, Vamsha Vriksha, in a supporting role. The same year, he starred in Naagarahaavu of Puttanna Kanagal and is recognized as “The Angry Man of Kannada Cinema”. He played various roles in different genres. He began his career with the national award-winning film Vamshavruksha (1972), directed by Girish Karnad, based on S. L. Bhyrappa’s novel. He has played various roles in more than 200 films.

Vishnuvardhan was born in Mysore of H. L. Narayana Rao and Kamakshamma. His ancestors are from Hallegere, Mandya District, Karnataka. His father was an artist, music composer and screenwriter known for his collection of musical instruments. He had six brothers and sisters. His sister Rama was a Kathak dancer at Mysore Palace and his brother Ravi was a child actor who appeared in the 1955 Tamil and Kannada bilingual film, Modala Thedi. He first studied at Gopalswamy School in Mysore and then at Kannada High School in Bangalore. He attended high school and graduated from National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore.

Vishnuvardhan married actress Bharathi on February 17, 1975 in Bangalore. They adopted two children, Keerthi and Chandana.

On December 30, 2009, Vishnuvardhan died of a major cardiac arrest at King’s Court Hotel in Mysore. He is survived by his wife, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan, and his two daughters, Keerthi and Chandana. He was cremated with state honors at Abhiman studio in Bengaluru.
